One of the campus goals at Legacy Elementary is to increase parent involvement. In the past they have hosted a science night and a family reading night. This semester, the leadership team at Legacy wanted a parent event that included science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. 

On Thursday night, Legacy opened their doors to students and parents for a night full of art displays, math games, and STEAM related activities and presentations. The main goal of the night was to create a positive, welcoming, and exciting environment that encourages parents and students to come together and learn as a family with the Legacy staff. 

“We wanted to showcase the work of our students,” said Stephanie Nations, Legacy Assistant Principal. “The Legacy STEAM and Robotics club had the opportunity to present their work from this year to parents and other students. Legacy student artwork and science fair projects were also showcased during the event.” 

Heritage Middle School and Terra Vista Middle school robotics teams also had presentations set up for students and parents to explore. Students were given the opportunity to drive the robots and attempt to complete tasks with the robots.  

In addition to Frenship clubs, Legacy invited The Fibermax Center for Discovery, and the Texas Tech STEM Center for Outreach, Research and Education to provide presentations and activities at the extravaganza. 

Another goal of the event was to also provide materials and training for parents and families to take what they learned and use it together at home. Legacy teachers hosted math games in the cafeteria, where they taught families how to play together and sent them supplies.  

Nations stated that creating a welcoming environment where families can interact and learn alongside the staff is important to the Legacy culture. “Events such as this allows our staff the ability to deepen the relationships they foster with each of our families. We also believe that it is important to showcase the amazing work that our Legacy students produce and participate in daily.” 

Over 300 people attended the Legacy STEAM Extravaganza, and each family was given a punch card to take with them to each station throughout the night. At the end families could turn in their completed punch cards for a hat or pajama pass to be worn to school the day after.
