National History Day is a project-based learning opportunity for 7th-grade advanced academics students, similar to a science fair but for history. This year’s theme is Frontiers in History: People, Places, and Ideas.
Participating students had to create a research question and statement, conduct their research, and then create a project to showcase their learnings. They could create an exhibit board, website, documentary, historical paper, or performance.
Frenship ISD took 17 teams of 7th graders from all three middle schools to compete at the National History Day Regional competition at Texas Tech last weekend. At the end of the competition, five Frenship teams placed in the top two of their categories to secure a spot at the State Contest.
This is only the third year for the Frenship middle schools to be involved with the National History Day contest. Since getting involved, Frenship has continued to improve each year, with this year's students setting a record with five teams advancing to state.
The Frenship teams attending state are advancing with projects formatted as websites and documentaries. The websites are created on a software program designated for the National History Day contest. Students have completed all the research for their project and learned how to code and develop the website. The students with documentaries created PowerPoints or Canva projects with images, texts, and videos around their project information, which was then transferred into mp4 formats.
The following students will compete at the state contest held at the University of Austin in April.
