Early last month, the 2023 West Texas Regional Scholastic Art Competition took place at Wayland Baptist University. Hundreds of students across the region from middle school and high school submitted art for this competition.
At Scholastic Art Competition students can be awarded gold keys, silver keys, or honorable mentions for their artwork. Gold Keys are the first-place award, meaning all three judges recognized the work as show worthy. Silver Keys are awarded when two judges recognize the work.
All three Frenship middle schools were represented at this competition, earning 36 awards between the campuses with seven gold keys, 14 silver keys and 15 honorable mentions.
Frenship High School had 107 entries, with 55 students taking home awards for their art. Among the Frenship High School students there was 24 Golds Key, 13 Silvers and 18 Honorable mentions, with one student being awarded the American Vision Award.
At the Regional contests, judges award five American Vision Awards as the top pieces in the show. These pieces are chosen by the three judges from all the work that earned a gold key. One of these five will win an award at the National contest.
The entire competition is currently on display at Wayland Baptist University. The exhibit features more than 300 art pieces created by students in grades 7 to 12 from across the area and is open for public viewing through February 4, at the Abraham Art Gallery. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 2-5 p.m.
