The new safety measures were approved by the City of Lubbock during the June 28 city council meeting and will be installed before the 2022-2023 school year begins.

In order for the additional school zones to be approved, the Frenship ISD Police Department had to submit a request to the City of Lubbock Traffic Department. The Traffic Department then conducts a pedestrian study to determine what safety measures are needed in the requested areas. 

At the end of the study, the City of Lubbock has approved the following additions for the two campuses:

Oak Ridge Elementary

• Oak Ridge Avenue will be reduced to 20MPH with added signage and a new designated crosswalk at 68th Street
• A new designated crosswalk will be added to the existing school zone on 68th Street

Heritage Middle School

• Iola Avenue will be reduced to 20MPH with flashing beacons to help control traffic at the 73rd Street intersection

As Frenship families prepare for the first day of school on August 17, Frenship Police Chief Roy Bassett urges drivers to be vigilant around the campuses and be on the lookout for the changes.

“Before you know it, school will be starting back up again. As you’re dropping off your kids, look for things that have changed over the summer and be aware of the new crosswalks and the school zones,” said Bassett.
