Heritage Middle School Teacher Selected as 'Teacher on the Rise'

As the bell rang for fifth period and Morgan Kirby’s choir class settled in their seats, a few unexpected visitors took over the classroom to make a surprise announcement. “The first thing that went through my head was, are you sure you have the right person,” Kirby laughed.

They did have the right classroom, and they absolutely had the right teacher. A representative with Mrs. Baird’s announced to the excited class that Kirby had been selected as one of their 'Teachers on the Rise', a program that recognizes teachers for making a lasting impact on their students.

Each month, an elementary, middle school, and high school teacher across the Lubbock area are named 'Teachers on the Rise' based on nominations made by students. In Kirby’s case, two different students submitted nominations. The best part, the students had no idea they had both nominated her.

“It truly is special,” said Kirby. “I have never been acknowledged for something like this before, and I think it is more special to me that my own students, who see what I do every day, thought it was worth acknowledging.”

To help with the celebration, one of the nominating students, Hayden Keeton, read her nomination letter, citing how Kirby goes above and beyond to make sure her students feel loved and supported.

“They truly make me so happy and honored to teach them every day,” said Kirby. “This will be something I never forget.”

In the nine years Mrs. Baird’s has been honoring teachers through 'Teachers on the Rise', Kirby is the first Heritage Middle School teacher to receive the award.
