Seventh-grade math students at Heritage Middle School reported to the library Wednesday for class. At each table, sat four locked boxes. Students were divided into groups and instructed to open the first box and begin the puzzle. The puzzle had real-world probability questions to test their skills and understand. Once the first puzzle was complete, the code for the next box was revealed. This process was repeated until all the puzzles were complete and the boxes were unlocked. At that point, the students had escaped the probability unit!
Seventh-grade math teacher, Misty Hahn, stated, “Oftentimes we take a quiz or a test to check skills and understanding. I thought they would enjoy something a little more fun than having to answer questions on a page.”
The students worked hard in their groups to beat the clock. They wanted to open every box and finish every puzzle. Colton, a 7th grader at HMS, said, “This is a stressful and fun way to learn math. I want to finish these puzzles.” Each group unlocked their four boxes and escaped from Mrs. Hahn’s math class!
