The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Each Spring, Heritage Middle School will induct current 7th graders that meet the criteria stated in our bylaws (see resources) into National Junior Honor Society. NJHS is an honor society that members will participate in their 8th grade year. Four officers will be elected by current members of the NJHS and will serve their office during their 8th grade year. All members will need to maintain the high ideals of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship throughout their 8th grade year.

Each year, NJHS serves in Frenship, Lubbock and around the world!
  • Since 2011, HMS NJHS has participated in FISD Elementary Fall Festivals and Fun Days.
  • Each year, NJHS holds a fundraiser for UMC Miracle Pennies. We have raised over $1500 each year that has stayed locally at UMC through various fundraising activities such as dress up days, hamster ball races, jousting competitions, duct taping teachers to the wall, and the HMS Dodgeball tournament.
  • NJHS participates in Operation Christmas Child each year as well as making hygiene kits for Lubbock Impact.
  • NJHS also makes hospital bags for both pediatric and adult patients each spring for UMC.
